Eden House Apartments

Location: San Leandro, CA
Developer: Mercy Housing California
Completion: Winter 1999

This project consisted of site improvements to an existing 116-unit affordable housing complex, with renovations to individual units and common areas for accessibility and seismic upgrades. The site's 15 buildings were originally constructed in 1972 and required new building façades as well. The renovations were completed through a complex, phased process to work around residents, who remained on site.

The impetus for the project was the expiration of Section 8 designation, which motivated residents to form a cooperative and purchase the buildings with HUD funding. We worked with the cooperative and Mercy Housing California, the project’s non-profit developer.
